Welcome to City of Villains - your life of infamy starts here! If you are reading this, you are the lucky recipient of a City of Villains free trial. You are indeed well connected, and you will do well in the Rogue Isles…

Your free trial holds no obligations and does not require any credit card information. Simply follow these instructions and you will be playing City of Villains in no time!

At the end of the 14 days, you may choose to purchase City of Villains, either directly from PlayNC or any leading games retailer. That purchase will have another month of play time included, and subsequent months can be paid for using Game Time Cards (purchased at retail) or using a valid credit/debit card on the PlayNC website. You will be able to continue using your character(s) from the initial trial.

The 14 day trial serial code can be used to create a new account, or applied to an existing City of Heroes account. It cannot be applied to an existing City of Villains account.

Note: You can only apply one City of Villains free trial code to an existing City of Heroes account.

To start your City of Villains trial

First, activate your trial code:

Click here if you are an existing City of Heroes Account Holder (active or inactive).
Click here if you are new to City of Heroes / City of Villains.

Then, if you do not currently have City of Heroes installed on your PC, download the client:

Are you are an existing City of Heroes Account Holder?

If you already have a City of Heroes account, be sure to follow these instructions to upgrade your existing account, this will ensure you get access to all of the features that City of Heroes and City of Villains share.

1. Log in to your existing PlayNC account at PlayNC.com. Click ‘Manage’ and log in using the PlayNC Master Account name and password which has your existing City of Heroes account associated with it.
2. Locate your City of Heroes account in the ‘Games List’ section of your ‘MANAGE PLAYNC ACCOUNT’ page (see below). Click the ‘UPGRADE’ button to the right of the game listing.





3. On the ‘APPLY UPGRADE’ page (see below), enter your City of Villains 14-day free trial code located in the body of the email that you received and click ’ADD‘.





4. You will receive an on-screen confirmation, and a confirmation email will be sent to the email address you used to create your PlayNC Master Account. You’re ready to play City of Villains! Simply start City of Heroes and login as usual. You will be able to create villains and explore the Rogue Isles for the next 14 days.

Are you new to City of Heroes and City of Villains?

In order to activate your City of Villains trial, you will need a PlayNC Master Account. If you have an existing PlayNC Master Account, skip down to the instructions to add your City of Villains trial code to your existing game account.

Creating a PlayNC Master Account and adding your City of Villains trial

1. Go to PlayNC.com and click on ‘ACCOUNT’ on the left hand side of the page.
2. Click ‘Create’ to create a new account.





3. Choose an account name and password, and enter all the information required by the forms. Ensure you enter your email address correctly, as PlayNC will send a verification code to the email address you just entered, so that you can validate your account.
4. Check your email for your verification code, enter it on the ‘VERIFY EMAIL ADDRESS’ page (see below) and select ‘NEXT’.





5. Select ‘CONFIRM’ to verify your personal information.
6. Upon completion of your Master Account, click on the ‘ADD GAMES TO YOUR PlayNC ACCOUNT now!’ link in the middle of the page.
7. Enter your City of Villains 14-day free trial code located in the body of the email that you received and click ’ADD‘.





8. You will receive an on-screen acknowledgement, and a confirmation email. You’re ready to play City of Villains! To start you villainous career, you will need to download the game client to your PC.

Adding your City of Villains trial to an existing PlayNC account

1. Go to PlayNC.com and click on ‘Account’ on the left-hand side of the page.
2. Choose ‘Manage’ from the options.
3. Sign in using your PlayNC Master Account name and password.
4. Click the ‘ADD GAME’ link.
5. Enter your City of Villains 14-day free trial code and click ’ADD‘.
6. You will receive an on-screen acknowledgement, and a confirmation email. You’re ready to play City of Villains! To start you villainous career, you will need to download the game client to your PC.

Downloading City of Villains

1. Download the City of Villains Updater files from ftp://ftp.cityofvillains.com/client/EU/CityOfVillains_Updater.EU.zip.
2. Extract both the ‘CohUpdater.EU.exe’ and ‘CovUpdater.EU.exe’ files to your desktop.
3. Run ‘CovUpdater.EU.exe’.
4. You will be asked where you want to install the game - choose a new location or accept the default (C:\Program Files\City of Heroes)*.
5. The updater will download all the necessary files for you to play City of Villains. This is a large download, but you can cancel the updater at any point and resume at a more convenient time.
6. Once the client has downloaded, quit the Updater and move both the ‘CohUpdater.EU.exe’ and ‘CovUpdater.EU.exe’ files to the folder where you installed City of Villains (C:\Program Files\City of Heroes by default), then create a shortcut to the ‘CovUpdater.EU.exe’ file on your desktop. (You can rename this shortcut, but do not rename the file itself.)
7. Launch the game via the shortcut. When the Updater Window appears, click ‘Next’ and read the User Agreement that appears. Click ‘I Agree’ to load the game.
8. Enter your game account name and password to log in, select a server and begin creating your first villain!

* Please note that City of Villains will be installed to a folder called ‘City of Heroes’. This is normal - both City of Heroes and City of Villains share the same client, and if you buy both games, you will only need one install. If you choose a new location when installing, the Updater will automatically create a ‘City of Heroes’ folder in the location you select. So, if you want to install to C:\Games\City of Heroes, for example, you should choose ‘C:\Games’.
